Message of the UN Resident Coordinator in the Philippines on the Transforming Education Summit
United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in the Philippines Gustavo Gonzalez calls to mobilize support to the Transforming Education Summit (TES).
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is convening the TES during the 77th UN General Assembly. The Summit seeks to mobilize political ambition, action, solutions and solidarity to transform education: to take stock of efforts to recover pandemic-related learning losses; to reimagine education systems for the world of today and tomorrow; and to revitalize national and global efforts to achieve SDG-4.
The text of Mr. Gonzalez's video message follows:
Everyone knows that education plays a fundamental role in building a society.
Education contributes to the transmission of knowledge, values, norms, culture.
Education puts people together and creates capacities for dialogue and action.
We also know that countries that invest in education are better prepared for the future.
But, today, education is in trouble.
We are facing profound social, political, economic, environmental and technological change, and there is a growing consensus that today’s education systems are no longer fit for purpose.
Education must be transformed.
That’s the reason why the United Nations Secretary General called for a global summit that will take place this coming September, in New York, “to transform education”.
The Secretary General’s idea is to mobilize heads of states, political leaders, youth leaders, representatives from the private sector, civil society organizations, academe, to exchange and debate proposals on how to transform education.
Everyone is expected to contribute to this important event.
The future of education concerns all of us, without exception.
